The light, crispy batter is a common favorite among diners, providing the perfect crunch with every bite. Many customers rave about the tender, fresh cod that never fails to impress. The chunky, golden brown chips are another highlight, prized for their perfect balance of crispiness and fluffiness inside. Generous portion sizes enhance the value, with meals designed to satisfy. Finally, the friendly and efficient service round out the positive aspects, making customers feel welcome and appreciated each visit.

Most Disliked

Some customers mention that the shop’s exterior could use a little sprucing up. Although the interior is clean, the outside might deter potential diners at first glance. A few patrons have noted longer wait times during busy periods, especially if they do not call ahead. The surrounding area might not seem the most inviting, which can give an impression of less quality than what is truly delivered. Additionally, while the prices are quite reasonable, a handful of visitors expect lower prices for takeaway food.

Amazing fish and chips, really glad I discovered this place. The food was up there with the very best I have ever had out of the countless chip shops I have tried up and down the country. Got to be the best in Reading and probably Berkshire too. Expertly cooked to order with quality ingredients getting every aspect just right. Light, crisp batter with tender fresh cod inside with the best chips I have had in a very long time - chunky thick cut, nice golden brown colour, crisp on the outside and soft potato inside. Both the fish and the chips were well drained and not greasy. Cod, small chips and mushy peas cost £11.10. Not the cheapest but worth every penny and nice large portion sizes. The food was well packed in a cardboard box so stayed warm and didn’t go soggy at all before eating. The shop looks a bit run down on the outside and isn’t in the nicest part of town, but don’t let that put you off, it’s very clean inside and has 5/5 food hygiene rating. Friendly service and the usual menu choices. Highly recommended, I will definitely be back. Cannot fault them, wish it was my local!

I hadn't been here for over 10 years and randomly decided to go last week. I have also been back since! The fish and chips was freshly cooked, it tasted so good. Lovely staff and very efficient. I would call beforehand if you don't want to wait for your food to be ready. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be my go to from now on!

Delicious piece of battered Cod and chips on a Friday evening. Had to wait 10 minutes for it to be cooked, but well worth the wait.

Basing this review on three recent collection takeaways. The fish shop is very quiet, never more than one other customer, so everything is freshly fried. The oriental lady batters the fish in front of you and puts chips on to fry. The result is fish and chips as good as you could hope for, the fish is tender and moist without any greasy, sticky aftertaste, the chips the best fish-shop chips I've eaten, crisp and dry. 555 is the last fish & chip shop on the Oxford Rd, been going with changing owners for over 50 years, since when folks queued outside the door on Friday night ...
